Universal Principles

 Successful people throughout history have discovered and applied the seven keys to creating astonishing levels of success in their lives. The following quotations, which are some of my favorites, affirm the importance of these universal success principles.

 Commitment

It is difficult to say when the first self-help, or personal development, the book was written. There are a number of ancient books that might be considered as candidates including, for example, the book of Proverbs from The Bible. Certainly, by the time of the great Greek philosophers, many of the principles we would now recognize as basic self-help tenets, including the importance of goal-setting, had been proposed; indeed some by Aristotle himself.


In America, self-help material has been in existence since the time of the Declaration of Independence. It is perhaps not surprising when you look at some of the principles enshrined in that document.

 We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Those ideas contrast markedly with the dominant attitude in Europe, at that time, which is best summed up in the theory of the Divine Right of Kings. This theory extends well backward into time and has probably been around as long as monarchy itself.

Jacques-Benigne Bossuet (1627-1704) reinforced medieval notions of kingship in his theory of the Divine Right of Kings, a theory that argued that certain kings ruled because they were chosen by God to do so and that these kings were accountable to no person, except God.

Basically, in Europe up to the time of its revolutions, we thought that it was not the place of ordinary men and women to entertain ideas such as self-advancement. However, today we live in much more enlightened times in which many people are bold enough to believe that we can actually create our own reality and that our quality of life is largely a matter of choice. Irrespective of where we were born, and regardless of the circumstances, successful people throughout history have adopted these seven principles to change their lives for the better.

Accepting personal responsibility for your own life is, in my view, a hallmark of the adult character. It is an acceptance of the fact that life is not fair, and a subsequent taking-on of the responsibility for where your own life will take you. It is completely acceptable that we didn’t all get the same start in life and that the odds may be stacked in favor of some people who don’t realize just how privileged they are, but that the remainder of the script for your life has not yet been written.
